Fragments from the Vault #002: The Lower Depths

We ride to The Lower Depths for a lonely soliloquy of "Too Late to Love You" by The Weird Vector (Johnny & Junebug)

Highway dust and the dew-soaked warmth of asphalt's morning. A gas station full of ghosts and the old man who writes poetry to crickets and car fumes echoing in the belly of the turnpike. Stretches of highway meander in and out of farmhouses fading into forests, the engine's subterranean growl lulling me in rhythmic hazy half-sleeps on prehistoric dirt tracks; northeast is my rumbling trajectory.

I love the road. The twilight metamorphosis. Night rolls onwards, exhausting, neon signs bleeding soft beams into whiskey bars enclosing the darkness spilling onto heavy bones as I rest and breathe outward in vacant corners. Here is The Lower Depths, my last stop. Stale with yesterday's muted solace and heartache.

Here she sings, lifting the ceiling's thousand fragments into an endless expanse of the sky to let time cycle an age... The luminous moon its vagabond sentinel, her voice haunting my memories of birdsong afternoons and coffee with an old sweet love, never requited, replete, as I drift the way of the tombs which only the fiery stars keep quietly close, to forget and sleep.
