The dark is long,
And the quiet: Neverending.
The scent of frost on skin
As you crossed from the rift
and into the warmth of
Our primal heart,
Gathering grief
From your blister-gnawed hands
While the chill of a swan song hung in the air
Above spike-necked cedars
Clustering northbound
In latitudes expired -
I waited outside where the wolves
Stained our porch and the chalky
Vanguards of polestar pastures
Gave the aurora the last of your light,
Leaving me with nothing!
But the salvage of singular mercy:
A sole steel casing ground up on your shelf,
Your absence to fill my hungry abyss -
And always the quiet, endless the dark.
